About

The Suburban Abyss is a podcast and blog written, produced and hosted by Chad Andrew Dryden from his home in between Akron and Cleveland, Ohio.

A record store owner, former journalist and Ohio University graduate, Dryden conceived The Suburban Abyss after leaving Boise, Idaho, mid-pandemic to move back to his place of birth with his wife and daughter, and more specifically, to a quiet suburb of 22,000 people – one-tenth the size of Boise’s exploding population.

On the surface, it was a strange move during strange times – uprooting their lives and fleeing a boom town where they had a strong social circle, a significant presence in the creative community and a 10-minute drive to all the action. But the pull of their East Coast roots, and more specifically, family, pulled them back across the Mississippi and into a place of willful anonymity.

From this strange perch Dryden shares his insights and experiences with moving, music, pop culture, the pandemic and part-time house husbandry, filtered through the lens of his downshifted new life in the leafy green nowhere.
